Head shape abnormalities in babies most commonly result in something called “positional plagiocephaly.” A baby’s skull bones are very soft and when a baby spends more time laying on one side, the skull on this side can become flattened. This “positional plagiocephaly,” if severe enough, can be treated with a helmet.
Of course, there are other more serious causes of head shape abnormalities in children. Rest assured, our physicians are experts in determining positional plagiocephaly from other causes of plagiocephaly, such as a fused skull suture.
