Schedule your visit with our board-certified fellowship-trained Pediatric Plastic Surgeon. Dr. Biskup will listen to your concerns, exam your child, and review available options to help your child look and feel his or her best! Usually, ear reconstruction is done when your child is at least 7-9 years of age. There is no age limit to when the ear can be reconstructed.

The first surgery is done at Wesley Children’s Hospital, with recovery usually requiring a 1-2 day hospital stay. We will review aftercare instruction and plan on seeing your child back regularly as he or she heals. The subsequent stages are also done at Wesley Children’s Hospital but typically do not require a hospital stay.

After completing external ear reconstruction, we will refer you and your child back to the ENT doctors to determine if you are a candidate for ear canal reconstruction or placement of a bone anchored hearing aid. If your child has any associated conditions such as Treacher-Collins, Hemifacial Microsomia, Goldenhar Syndrome, or others, we will recommend seeing them in our multidisciplinary clinic, the Kansas Cleft and Craniofacial Center.

Make sure to wash your head and ears thoroughly before surgery.

After surgery, your child will have a dressing on his/her head and a small drainage tube for one week. You may not get your child’s ear wet until the surgical glue used in surgery comes off, at about 2-3 weeks. You will not be able to engage in any activity with a risk of hitting or damaging your ear for 6 weeks. This includes no PE, no ball or contact sports, and no rough housing. After 6 weeks, all restrictions are lifted. The second stage of the procedure usually happens 6 months after the first stage.
